When asked about volunteer participation and their motivations for doing so, many non-profit executives responded that they have a number of reasons for participating in team and volunteer engagement. They cited numerous reasons for engaging the community, explaining that it gives them a chance to give back to the communities that they serve, develop new skills while working side by side with local youth and give to the development of local youth. Many also cited that the most important aspect of their involvement in these types of activities is the opportunity to impact others lives through their endeavors. They said that their goal is to make a difference in the lives of others. Many non-profit executives expressed concern about the negative press that has been surrounding volunteer engagement, and some even worry that their organizations are taking a huge step into the unknown by allowing volunteer groups to self-organize and create programs without some form of structure or guidelines. Building a Strong Relationship With Your Volunteer Recruitment Team
Through our work with animal welfare charities we have found that, when properly used, volunteer engagement can have a tremendous positive impact on the performance and productivity of a charity. Through our partnerships with local youth soccer teams and other youth group organizations, we have seen that engaging the community around a common cause creates a sense of urgency for participants. Because the teams have certain members who live outside of the charity area, it creates an incentive for them to engage in volunteer activities outside of their normal work hours. Because they know that if they do not engage, their team members will, they will be less likely to give, which will have a direct positive impact on the numbers of people who donate to the charity.
Our research has also shown that engaging volunteers in meaningful activities makes them feel like their a part of something larger than themselves. As they are engaged in the activities of the organization, they become more emotionally attached and develop a sense of responsibility for the projects. In turn, this can lead to higher levels of motivation and loyalty, which are essential functions for a nonprofit organization. Our research also shows that as participants grow as fundraisers, donors become motivated to support the nonprofit organizations. Engaging your volunteers in the vital processes of your organization will greatly enhance its ability to serve its communities.
