Classic Towels That Combine Tradition with Quality
For the softest towels, opt for ones made with long-staple cotton (also known as ELS or extra-long staple fibers). This type of cotton is typically combed and ring spun, meaning it has been processed to remove impurities and create smoother strands of yarn that are stronger and more absorbent than short-staple cotton. Look for a GSM number between 500 and 600; the higher this figure, the more plush and absorbent a towel will be.
Other materials you may come across include bamboo, modal, and viscose (a semi-synthetic material derived from wood pulp). While these offer some benefits, such as lighter weight and faster drying times, they are less durable than cotton and can be rough on your skin.
The best bath towels in our test were made with Turkish, Egyptian, or Pima cotton. In particular, those with the label stating Turkish, Egyption, or Supima cotton were the most plush. These types of cotton have longer fibers than standard bath towels and are more absorbent, while maintaining a soft feel even after multiple washes. Other high-performing bath towels included the Frontgate Onsen and Target’s Casaluna waffle, which are both made with a high-quality cotton as well as bamboo and modal for an added boost of absorbency. Both have a softer texture than the average bath towel, but they are a little bit pricier.
