A properly insulated attic can greatly reduce your home’s energy waste and increase comfort. But it’s important to choose the right insulation and ensure it is installed correctly to obtain the desired R-value and maximize your savings. A professional installer will inspect your attic space to determine the correct level of insulation, repair any air leaks, and install a vapor barrier.
There are 4 types of attic insulation, and each has its own pros and cons:
Blanket or batt Insulation Contractor comes in sheets that are typically made from fiberglass, plastic, or natural materials like wool and mineral wool. It is a popular DIY option for attic insulation and offers lower initial costs than other options. However, it is less effective in hot climates and tends to settle over time, which can reduce its R-value.
Blown-in insulation, also known as loose-fill or cellulose, is comprised of small particles that are installed using a blowing machine. It is more comprehensive than batt insulation, and it’s commonly made from recycled materials like paper products and cotton. However, it can be prone to moisture absorption (particularly if the material is not fully dry), which can lead to mold growth and rot.
Spray foam is the most effective insulation, sealing air leaks and providing high R-values in less material than other types. However, it is toxic to touch, and it requires a respirator, goggles, and protective gear to work with. It is best used for areas like attic doors and knee walls, or for filling in HVAC chases and gaps.
